Scientific Name: Pinguicula vallisneriifolia

Also known as: Spanish Butterwort, Long-Leaved Butterwort

Origin: Endemic to southern Spain, particularly limestone cliffs and rocky outcrops in Andalusia.

Pinguicula vallisneriifolia is a striking and uncommon species known for its elegant, narrow, strap-like leaves that can grow over 10 cm long. These leaves radiate outward in a rosette and are covered in tiny glandular hairs that secrete a sticky mucilage to trap small insects. Under strong light, the foliage may develop a red or pink blush at the tips. This species thrives in high humidity and cooler temperatures and is considered one of the more visually distinct European butterworts due to its leaf shape and dramatic growth habit.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light to filtered sun. Artificial grow lights (5000–6500K) work well, especially during darker months.

Water: Use only low-mineral water such as distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep the soil evenly moist.

  • Succulent phase (if entered): Allow substrate to dry slightly between waterings, but do not allow to fully dry out.

Humidity: 60–90% preferred. Provide good ventilation to prevent mold and rot.

Temperature: Best suited to cooler conditions, ideally between 10–20°C. Can tolerate brief colder spells but not freezing.

Feeding: Captures small insects naturally. In indoor settings, feed with small portions of dried bloodworms or fish food every few weeks if prey is unavailable.

Dormancy: No true dormancy, but growth may slow or shift to tighter, more succulent leaves in winter or low light.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With the right light and time, it will develop its full coloration. Mature rosettes can span 6–12 cm depending on growing conditions.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with a ventilated lid to retain humidity during transport. Topped with sterile media or moss for protection.

Medium: Special low-nutrient, moisture-retentive mix suitable for carnivorous plants.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid watering from above—water around the base to protect delicate leaves.

  • Only use mineral-free water—regular tap water can cause root burn and mineral buildup.

  • Maintain airflow—stagnant air combined with high humidity can lead to fungal issues.
