Scientific Name: Pinguicula 'Sethos x Fraser'

Also known as: Sethos-Fraser Hybrid, Pink-Rosette Butterwort (informally)

Origin: A cultivated hybrid combining Pinguicula 'Sethos' (a hybrid of ehlersiae x moranensis) with Pinguicula moranensis 'Fraser' – both with Mexican lineage and known for vibrant leaf coloration and compact growth.

Pinguicula 'Sethos x Fraser' is a compact and colourful hybrid Mexican butterwort that produces tight rosettes of rounded, spoon-shaped leaves. Under strong light, the foliage takes on a striking pink or rose hue, often with a soft green base. Leaves are covered in tiny mucilage-producing glands that trap small insects such as fruit flies and fungus gnats. This hybrid is prized for its intense colouration and ease of care, making it an excellent addition to windowsill collections and terrariums alike.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light or filtered sunlight. Performs beautifully under artificial grow lights (5000–6500K).

Water: Use only mineral-free water such as distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep soil consistently damp but not soggy.

  • Succulent phase: Allow the substrate surface to dry slightly between waterings.

Humidity: 60–85% ideal. Ensure gentle ventilation to discourage mold growth.

Temperature: Prefers mild, stable conditions between 16–25°C. Avoid cold drafts and frost.

Feeding: Naturally captures small flying insects. If grown indoors without prey, offer a tiny amount of dried bloodworms or fish food monthly.

Dormancy: No true dormancy. May shift to more succulent-like leaves in cooler or drier conditions.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With the right light and time, it will develop its full coloration. Grows to about 5–8 cm across when mature.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with a ventilated lid for humidity retention. Top layer includes moss or sterile media.

Medium: Custom low-nutrient carnivorous plant mix—moisture-retentive and airy.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid wetting the leaves directly—this can disrupt their sticky surface and encourage mold.

  • Use only mineral-free water—tap water can damage roots and cause salt buildup.

  • Maintain airflow—especially in humid environments, to reduce the risk of fungal problems.
