Scientific Name: Pinguicula 'Scarlet Witch'

Also known as: Scarlet Witch Butterwort

Origin: A cultivated hybrid of Mexican Pinguicula, likely involving red-blushing moranensis or agnata lineage, bred for dramatic foliage coloration and compact growth.

Pinguicula 'Scarlet Witch' is a stunning hybrid butterwort known for its bold colour and symmetrical form. The rosette is composed of broad, smooth leaves that flush deep pink to scarlet red under bright light, contrasting beautifully with its pale green center. Like all butterworts, the leaf surfaces are covered in tiny sticky glands that capture and digest small insects, making it both beautiful and functional. This hybrid is a standout on any grow shelf and a favourite among collectors of high-colour cultivars.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light or filtered sunlight. Strong LED grow lights (5000–6500K) enhance red pigmentation.

Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep the soil consistently moist.

  • Succulent phase: Allow the surface of the substrate to dry slightly between waterings.

Humidity: 60–85% ideal. Gentle airflow helps prevent mold and leaf rot.

Temperature: Thrives in 16–25°C. Protect from frost and avoid extreme heat without added humidity.

Feeding: Captures small flying insects naturally. Indoors, feed monthly with crushed dried bloodworms or fish flakes (no additives) if prey is unavailable.

Dormancy: No true dormancy. Growth may slow or leaf shape may change slightly in cooler months.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With bright light and proper care, it will develop its vibrant scarlet tones. Mature rosettes reach approximately 5–8 cm across.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to maintain humidity during transit. Top layer includes moss or sterile medium.

Medium: Low-nutrient carnivorous plant mix—moisture-retentive, well-draining, and airy.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid getting water on the leaves—to preserve their sticky coating and avoid mold.

  • Use only mineral-free water—tap water can damage roots and cause mineral buildup.

  • Ensure light airflow—especially in humid environments, to prevent fungal issues and support healthy growth.
