Scientific Name: Pinguicula moranensis 'Fraser x Caudata'

Also known as: Fraser-Caudata Hybrid Butterwort, Mexican Butterwort (informal)

Origin: A cultivated cross between Pinguicula moranensis 'Fraser' and Pinguicula caudata, both species native to the mountainous regions of Mexico where humidity and limestone substrates are abundant.

Pinguicula moranensis 'Fraser x Caudata' is a beautifully balanced hybrid that features a wide, symmetrical rosette of flat, slightly pointed leaves. The leaves are pale green to soft pink in bright conditions and are coated in sticky glands that trap and digest tiny insects. This hybrid combines the vigor and size of moranensis 'Fraser' with the compact elegance and slightly caudate leaf tips of P. caudata, making it both striking and easy to care for.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light or filtered sun. Grows well under artificial grow lights (5000–6500K).

Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep the soil evenly moist.

  • Succulent phase: Allow the surface to dry slightly before watering again.

Humidity: 60–85% is ideal. Provide light airflow to help prevent fungal issues.

Temperature: Performs best between 16–25°C. Avoid cold drafts and freezing temperatures.

Feeding: Feeds on small flying insects. If kept indoors without access to bugs, feed sparingly with crushed dried bloodworms or fish flakes monthly.

Dormancy: No true dormancy. Growth may slow slightly or leaves may become more compact in winter.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With the right light and time, it will develop its full coloration. Mature rosettes typically reach 6–10 cm in diameter.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with a ventilated lid to retain humidity during shipping. Top layer includes sterile moss or media for protection.

Medium: Specially blended carnivorous plant mix—low in nutrients, moisture-retentive, and breathable.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid watering directly onto the leaves—it can wash away the sticky traps and encourage mold.

  • Use only mineral-free water—tap water can cause salt buildup and damage the roots.

  • Ensure proper airflow—this keeps the growing environment healthy and reduces risk of fungal problems.
