Scientific Name: Pinguicula moranensis 'El Tepozan'

Also known as: El Tepozán Butterwort, Tepoz Butterwort

Origin: Tepozán region, Morelos, Mexico – a mountainous area rich in limestone and cloud forest conditions, part of the native range of P. moranensis forms.

Pinguicula moranensis 'El Tepozan' is a beautiful regional variant of the classic moranensis species. It forms a flat to slightly domed rosette of broad, fleshy leaves that range from light green to deep pink under strong light. Like other butterworts, its leaves are covered in sticky glands that trap small flying insects, offering natural pest control. This form is known for its vibrant coloration, excellent symmetry, and dependable growth, making it a favourite among collectors and suitable for beginners.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light or filtered sunlight. Performs well under artificial grow lights (5000–6500K).

Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy.

  • Succulent phase: Allow the surface to dry slightly before watering again.

Humidity: 60–85% ideal. Gentle airflow is recommended to reduce fungal risk.

Temperature: Best between 16–25°C. Avoid frost and protect from cold drafts.

Feeding: Catches small insects on its own. Indoors, feed occasionally with crushed dried bloodworms or fish flakes (no additives) if natural prey is unavailable.

Dormancy: No true dormancy, but growth may slow and leaves may become more succulent in lower light or cooler seasons.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With the right light and time, it will develop its full coloration. Mature plants typically reach 6–10 cm across.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid for humidity retention during transit. Includes protective moss or sterile medium on top.

Medium: Low-nutrient carnivorous plant soil—moisture-retentive and well-aerated.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid getting water directly on the leaves—to preserve the sticky mucilage and prevent rot.

  • Use mineral-free water only—tap water can lead to salt buildup and root damage.

  • Keep air moving—helps prevent fungal issues in humid conditions.
