Scientific Name:

Pinguicula laueana ‘Crimson Flower’

Also Known As:

Laueana Butterwort, Crimson Flower Butterwort

Origin:

Native to Oaxaca, Mexico. This species of Pinguicula is unique among butterworts for producing true red flowers, making it highly sought after by collectors and breeders. Unlike many hybrids, P. laueana is a pure species selected for its vivid floral display.

Description

Pinguicula laueana ‘Crimson Flower’ is a rare and striking carnivorous plant prized for its brilliant crimson-red flowers, which are unmatched in the genus. Its rosettes of broad, slightly glossy green leaves are covered with microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage, used to trap small insects.

The flowers are the standout feature—intensely red, 2–4 cm across, with a velvety texture that blooms during the active growing season. This makes it a centerpiece in carnivorous plant collections, terrariums, or displays where colour impact is desired.

Growing Requirements

Light:
Bright indirect light to filtered sun, or under strong full-spectrum LED lighting (5000–6500K). Adequate light encourages compact growth and healthy red flower production.

Water:
Distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) only. Avoid tap water, as minerals will damage the plant.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase / Active growth (spring–summer): Keep soil evenly moist by watering from below or keeping the cup in a shallow tray of water.

  • Succulent phase / Dormant phase (winter): Reduce watering significantly, allowing the soil surface to partially dry between waterings.

Humidity:
50–70% is ideal. Good airflow prevents mold and fungus, especially during the carnivorous phase.

Temperature:
Prefers mild conditions: 15–28 °C. Protect from frost and avoid prolonged heat above 30 °C.

Feeding:
Naturally feeds by catching gnats and small insects on its sticky leaves. Indoors, you can supplement with occasional crushed fish food flakes or freeze-dried bloodworms placed sparingly on leaves.

Dormancy:
Yes—P. laueana enters a succulent-leaf dormancy in cooler months. Leaves become smaller, firmer, and non-carnivorous. Watering should be reduced until active growth resumes in spring.

What’s Included

Plant:
1 young Pinguicula laueana ‘Crimson Flower’ shipped in a grow cup. Size on arrival: approximately 2–4 cm rosette, with colour variation depending on growth stage. Mature rosettes can reach 6–12 cm across, with flowers 2–4 cm wide.

Grow Cup / Pot:
Clear plastic grow cup (approx. 5–7 cm) with lid to help retain humidity during transit and establishment.

Medium:
Specialized low-nutrient mix designed for butterworts—peat and perlite blend with added aeration to mimic natural limestone crevices.

Instructions:
Basic planting and care guide included for successful acclimation.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid watering directly onto the leaves—apply water to the soil or tray to prevent rot.

  • Always use mineral-free water (rain, distilled, or RO).

  • Ensure airflow around the plant to discourage mold and fungal issues.

  • During dormancy, reduce watering and do not force the plant to remain wet.
