Scientific Name: Pinguicula 'Guatemala'

Also known as: Guatemalan Butterwort, Central American Butterwort

Origin: Thought to originate from highland regions of Guatemala, this form or species variant is adapted to warm, humid cloud forest conditions with limestone substrates and high seasonal rainfall.

Pinguicula 'Guatemala' is a rare and elegant Central American butterwort known for its compact rosette and glossy, spoon-shaped leaves. The foliage is typically a soft green but can develop a pink blush under strong light. Like all Pinguicula, the leaves are covered in sticky glands that capture and digest tiny insects, offering natural pest control in indoor setups. This plant is highly sought after for its neat growth habit, ease of care, and adaptation to warm, humid conditions without a true dormancy.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light or filtered sunlight. Performs well under full-spectrum LED grow lights (5000–6500K).

Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep the soil evenly moist.

  • Succulent phase (if any): Allow the top layer of the substrate to dry slightly between waterings.

Humidity: 60–90% preferred. Provide gentle airflow to prevent mold and mildew.

Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions between 18–26°C. Not frost tolerant—keep above 10°C at all times.

Feeding: Naturally catches small flying insects. If grown indoors without access to bugs, feed monthly with crushed dried bloodworms or fish flakes (without additives).

Dormancy: No true dormancy. Growth may slow slightly during cooler months.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With proper care and lighting, it will develop its full coloration. Mature rosettes typically reach 5–7 cm across.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to maintain humidity during shipping. Includes a top layer of sterile moss or protective medium.

Medium: Custom low-nutrient carnivorous plant mix—moisture-retentive, well-draining, and airy.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid watering directly on the leaves—to preserve their sticky surface and reduce rot risk.

  • Use only mineral-free water—tap water may cause salt buildup and damage sensitive roots.

  • Ensure airflow—especially in high humidity setups, to prevent fungal issues and encourage healthy growth.
