Scientific Name: Pinguicula gigantea var. synalta

Also known as: Giant Mexican Butterwort, Synalta Butterwort

Origin: Mexico – believed to be a regional or ecological variant of Pinguicula gigantea, typically found in limestone-rich, humid zones at mid to high elevations.

Pinguicula gigantea var. synalta is a large, striking carnivorous plant forming a broad, flat rosette of wide, glandular leaves. The leaves are pale green to slightly yellow-green and feel thick and fleshy to the touch. Like other butterworts, it captures prey on its sticky leaf surface—excellent for natural fungus gnat control. This variety is particularly known for its symmetry, slow but steady growth, and impressive final size, making it ideal as a showpiece in terrariums or on bright indoor shelves.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light or filtered sunlight. Can also be grown under full-spectrum grow lights (5000–6500K).

Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep the soil consistently moist but not saturated.

  • Succulent phase: Let the surface dry slightly between waterings.

Humidity: 60–90% preferred. Ensure gentle airflow, especially around the crown, to prevent mold.

Temperature: Thrives between 18–26°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C.

Feeding: Catches its own prey efficiently. Supplement with occasional crushed dried bloodworms or fish flakes if kept in an insect-free environment.

Dormancy: No true dormancy. Growth may slow or shift leaf shape slightly during the cooler months.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With the right light and time, it will develop its full coloration. Mature plants can reach 15–20 cm in diameter.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to maintain high humidity. The top layer is protected with moss or sterile medium.

Medium: Carnivorous plant mix—low in nutrients, airy, and retains moisture without compacting.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid overhead watering—especially on large leaves, as it can encourage rot.

  • Use only mineral-free water—tap water can cause salt build-up and harm roots.

  • Provide airflow—large-leafed Pinguicula benefit from circulation to keep mold at bay.
