Scientific Name: Pinguicula ehlersiae

Also known as: Ehlersiae Butterwort

Origin: A cultivated form or selected clone of Pinguicula ehlersiae, native to the limestone cliffs and mossy rock faces of San Luis Potosí, Mexico.

Pinguicula ehlersiae is a petite and delicately beautiful Mexican butterwort, forming a tight rosette of slightly scalloped, spoon-shaped leaves. The foliage is typically light green with a pale pink flush in bright light, often outlined with a soft red edge. Each leaf is coated in glandular hairs that trap and digest tiny flying insects. This variety stands out for its miniature size, intricate leaf shape, and soft pastel colouring—making it perfect for terrariums, grow shelves, and collectors of rare forms.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light or filtered sunlight. Develops best coloration under LED grow lights (5000–6500K).

Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep the soil consistently moist.

  • Succulent phase: Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.

Humidity: 60–85% preferred. Maintain light airflow to prevent mold in humid conditions.

Temperature: Grows well in 16–25°C. Protect from frost and extreme temperature fluctuations.

Feeding: Feeds on small insects naturally. Indoors, feed once a month with a pinch of crushed dried bloodworms or fish flakes (no additives) if needed.

Dormancy: No true dormancy, though leaf shape may shift seasonally, becoming more compact in winter.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With time and proper lighting, it will develop its soft pink tones and full rosette shape. Mature size is approximately 3–5 cm across.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to maintain humidity during shipping. Topped with sterile moss or protective media.

Medium: Specialised low-nutrient carnivorous plant mix—airily structured, moisture-retentive, and well-draining.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid watering directly onto leaves—to protect their sticky surface and prevent mould.

  • Only use mineral-free water—tap water may lead to salt accumulation and root damage.

  • Provide gentle airflow—important in high humidity setups to prevent fungal growth.
