Scientific Name: Drosera indica L.
Also Known As: Indian Sundew

Origin

Native to tropical and subtropical Asia, Africa, and Australia, Drosera indica thrives in warm, sunny wetlands, sandy bogs, and seasonally damp soils. This fast-growing annual sundew is one of the most widespread and striking of the sticky-leaved carnivores.

Description

Drosera indica is a tall, upright species that can reach 15–40 cm in height, making it one of the largest sundews. Unlike rosette-forming sundews, it grows on a central stem with long, narrow leaves radiating outward, each lined with glistening tentacles that ensnare insects. Its elegant structure and rapid growth make it a standout centerpiece in carnivorous plant collections. During summer, it produces clusters of white to pink flowers on tall stalks, opening in succession. Vigorous and eye-catching, D. indica is ideal for greenhouses, sunny balconies, or large terrariums.

Growing Requirements

Light:
Full sun or strong artificial light for 6–8 hours daily. Bright light promotes compact growth and vivid coloration.

Water:
Distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water only.

Watering:

  • Active growth (spring–summer): Keep soil wet at all times. A tray with 1–2 cm of water is recommended.

  • Cooler or dry seasons: Reduce watering slightly but never allow the soil to dry out completely.

Humidity:
50–80% preferred. Growth improves with higher humidity, but plants adapt well if soil remains moist.

Temperature:
Warm temperatures of 22–32 °C are ideal. Sensitive to cold; protect from frost.

Feeding:
Naturally catches flying insects. Indoors, supplement monthly with small prey such as fruit flies or powdered dried bloodworms. Avoid overfeeding.

Dormancy:
Annual growth cycle. Plants may decline after flowering and seed set but readily reseed under suitable conditions.
