Scientific Name: Drosera dielsiana 'Diels'
Also known as: Diels Sundew
Origin: Native to southern Africa, especially found in countries like South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini (Swaziland), growing in moist grasslands and highland wetlands.
Drosera dielsiana 'Diels' is a compact, rosette-forming sundew with spoon-shaped leaves that radiate outward in a tight spiral. Each leaf is covered in glistening red-tipped glands that secrete sticky mucilage to trap small insects. Under bright light, the entire plant can take on a stunning red to deep pink hue. This variety is prized for its bold colour, tidy growth habit, and tolerance of a wide range of growing conditions—ideal for terrariums, sunny windowsills, or outdoor bog gardens.
Light: Bright indirect light to full sun. Best colour achieved with strong light or full-spectrum LED grow lights (5000–6500K).
Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.
Watering:
Active growth phase: Keep soil consistently wet. A tray of standing water beneath the pot is ideal.
Dormant phase (if experienced): Reduce watering slightly, but never allow the substrate to dry out.
Humidity: 50–90% preferred. Adapts well to both open-air and enclosed terrarium conditions.
Temperature: Prefers 15–25°C. Can tolerate short drops near 5–10°C but not frost.
Feeding: Naturally traps small insects. Indoors, feed monthly with crushed dried bloodworms, fish flakes, or live food such as fruit flies if no prey is available.
Dormancy: No true dormancy in warm climates. May slow down or reduce leaf production in colder seasons.
Plant: Small 1-2cmand sometimes green in colour at this stage. Under bright light, it will develop rich red tones and a full rosette form. Mature plants typically reach 3–5 cm across.
Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to maintain humidity. Includes a top layer of sphagnum moss or sterile media for protection.
Medium: Peat-based carnivorous plant mix—nutrient-free, moisture-retentive, and breathable.
Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.
Never let the soil dry out—keep in a tray of mineral-free water.
Avoid feeding large prey—this small species prefers tiny insects.
Give it bright light—to trigger red coloration and maximum mucilage production.
