Dionaea muscipula ‘Kinky Wave’ is a distinctive Venus flytrap cultivar known for its dramatically ruffled trap margins and playful, twisting growth habit. Instead of the straight, symmetrical lobes seen in typical flytraps, ‘Kinky Wave’ produces traps with wavy, curled edges that give the plant a sculptural, almost animated appearance. Under strong light the traps colour to shades of pink-red internally, contrasting beautifully with the bright green exterior. Each sealed cup contains 1 or more plants, offering excellent value and the potential for a future clump.

Origin

All Venus flytraps originate from the coastal plain of southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina in the USA. ‘Kinky Wave’ shares this heritage but is selected for its unusual, undulating trap shape and lively growth form.

Tissue Culture Cup

Plants are supplied in sterile, sealed tissue-culture cups grown on a nutrient gel. This ensures they remain pest-free, disease-free, and stable during transit and storage. Most cups contain multiple cloned plantlets (“1+ plants”), giving you a strong start for potting up.

Care & Growing Conditions

Light: Provide strong, direct light—full sun outdoors or high-output grow lights indoors—to bring out red colouring and robust trap development.

Temperature & dormancy: A warm-temperate species that thrives in warm summers and requires a cool winter dormancy if grown outdoors in seasonal climates.

Soil: Use a nutrient-free carnivorous mix such as peat with perlite or silica sand. Avoid any fertilised or enriched potting mixes.

Water: Use only mineral-free water (distilled, RO, or rainwater). Keep the medium consistently moist; the tray method works reliably.

Feeding/Fertilizer: Do not fertilise the soil. If supplementing, offer small insects directly to the traps.

Humidity: The sealed cup maintains high humidity. Acclimate plants slowly by loosening the lid over 1–2 weeks; extend the period if foliage softens or wilts.

Hardening Process

  1. Remove ‘Kinky Wave’ from the cup and rinse all nutrient gel from the roots and leaves using purified water.

  2. Pot into a carnivorous plant mix (peat + perlite/sand).

  3. Place under a clear dome or humidity cover and vent gradually over 1–2 weeks (longer if needed).

  4. Move to normal growing conditions once new growth is firm and adapting well.

Why Choose ‘Kinky Wave’?

  • Unique wavy, curled trap edges that set it apart from standard Venus flytraps.

  • Attractive green-to-pink/red colouration under strong light.

  • Semi-upright habit that showcases its unusual traps.

  • Tissue-culture grown for health, vigour, and consistency.

  • Cups often include more than one plant for added value.
