Scientific Name: Drosera binata 'Fork-leaved Sundew'
Also known as: Forked Sundew, Forking Sundew
Origin: Native to Australia and New Zealand, Drosera binata grows in moist, sunny environments such as bogs, wet heathlands, and sandy soils.
Drosera binata 'Fork-leaved Sundew' is a unique and visually striking sundew known for its tall, upright growth and distinctive forked leaves. Each leaf divides into two or more arms lined with red-tipped, sticky glands that trap insects like flies and midges. Unlike rosette-forming sundews, this species stands above the soil, offering vertical visual interest and exceptional pest control. It's fast-growing, responsive to good lighting, and ideal for outdoor bog setups, windowsills, or grow-light terrariums.
Light: Full sun to bright indirect light. Performs best under strong artificial lighting (5000–6500K) or several hours of direct morning sun.
Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.
Watering:
Active growth: Keep the soil constantly wet. Best grown sitting in a tray of water.
Dormant phase (cooler months): Reduce watering slightly if growth slows or dies back, but don’t allow the soil to dry out completely.
Humidity: 50–85% preferred. Adapts well to open-air or terrarium conditions with adequate light and airflow.
Temperature: Tolerates a wide range, ideally 15–28°C. Can handle cooler temperatures but not frost.
Feeding: Will trap larger insects with ease. Indoors, feed monthly with dried bloodworms or fish flakes if no live prey is available.
Dormancy: May experience a partial dormancy or die-back in winter, especially in cooler climates. Regrows from the roots in spring.
Plant: Small 1-2cm and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With time and light, it will develop red-tinted forked leaves and grow upright. Mature height ranges from 10–30 cm depending on the form and conditions.
Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to retain humidity during transit. Top layer includes sphagnum moss or sterile medium for protection.
Medium: Peat-based, nutrient-free carnivorous plant mix—moisture-retentive and well-draining.
Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.
Keep the soil soaked—this sundew enjoys standing water.
Provide space and light—the forked leaves need room to unfurl and strong light to colour up.
Only use mineral-free water—tap water can cause root damage and leaf dieback.
