Scientific Name: Drosera communis A.St-Hil.
Also Known As: Communis Sundew, South American Sundew
Origin:
Native to South America, particularly Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina, Drosera communis grows in open, sunny, nutrient-poor habitats such as wet grasslands and sandy soils. It is one of the more adaptable subtropical sundews, thriving in both wild and cultivated settings.
Description:
Drosera communis is a slender, rosette-forming sundew prized for its elongated green leaves lined with glistening red, sticky tentacles that trap and digest small insects. In full sun, leaves can develop pink to red tones, contrasting beautifully with its glistening mucilage droplets. During its active growth period, it produces delicate white flowers on tall stalks. Hardy, adaptable, and easy to grow, this species is ideal for beginners and makes a rewarding addition to terrariums, sunny windowsills, or outdoor bog gardens in frost-free climates.
Light:
Full sun or bright artificial light (12–16 hrs daily). Strong light enhances red coloration in the leaves and tentacles.
Water:
Distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water only.
Watering:
Active growth: Keep soil consistently wet; a shallow tray of water beneath the pot works well.
Cooler months (reduced growth): Slightly reduce watering but never allow the soil to dry out.
Humidity:
50–80% preferred; adapts to lower humidity if soil moisture is maintained.
Temperature:
15–28 °C ideal; tolerates brief drops to 10 °C but is not frost-hardy.
Feeding:
Naturally traps small insects outdoors. Indoors, feed monthly with tiny prey such as crushed dried bloodworms, fish flakes, or live fruit flies.
Dormancy:
No true dormancy; growth may slow in cooler months.
Plant:
Young plant 1–2 cm across at shipping; may be green or lightly flushed with red. Mature plants typically reach 5–7 cm in rosette diameter.
Grow Cup / Pot:
5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to maintain humidity during early growth.
Medium:
Nutrient-free peat-based carnivorous plant mix that retains moisture while allowing airflow to the roots.
Instructions:
Step-by-step planting and care guide included.
Always use mineral-free water.
Provide strong light to maximise colour and mucilage production.
Maintain good airflow to help prevent mould or fungus.
