Scientific Name: Pinguicula 'Tina'

Also known as: Tina Butterwort

Origin: A widely cultivated hybrid, believed to be a cross between Pinguicula agnata and Pinguicula zecheri (or a closely related moranensis form), developed for ornamental use and ease of care.

Pinguicula 'Tina' is a vibrant and beginner-friendly Mexican butterwort known for its broad, fleshy leaves and stunning lavender-to-purple flowers. The leaves form a wide, flat rosette and range from lime green to soft pink under high light. Like all butterworts, they’re covered in tiny sticky glands that help trap and digest small flying insects like fungus gnats—providing both beauty and pest control. With its fast growth, bold colour, and repeat flowering habits, 'Tina' is one of the most popular and rewarding Pinguicula hybrids for indoor cultivation.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light to filtered sun. Excellent performance under full-spectrum LED grow lights (5000–6500K).

Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep the soil evenly moist.

  • Succulent phase: Allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings.

Humidity: 60–85% preferred. Provide gentle airflow to avoid stagnant conditions.

Temperature: Ideal range is 16–26°C. Protect from extreme cold or frost.

Feeding: Feeds naturally on small insects. Indoors, feed with crushed dried bloodworms or fish flakes once every 3–4 weeks if insects are unavailable.

Dormancy: No true dormancy, but may slow down in winter or change leaf shape slightly in response to light and temperature.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With time and bright light, it will develop its full coloration and may begin to flower. Mature rosettes typically reach 8–12 cm across.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to maintain humidity. Includes protective top layer of sterile moss or medium.

Medium: Specialised low-nutrient carnivorous plant soil—moisture-retentive and breathable.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid overhead watering—it can wash off the sticky traps and promote mold.

  • Use only mineral-free water—tap water can cause salt buildup and harm roots.

  • Ensure airflow—especially in humid environments, to prevent fungal issues and support healthy growth.
