Scientific Name: Pinguicula sp. 'Mazatecas'

Also known as: Mazatecas Butterwort, Unknown Species Butterwort (informal)

Origin: Believed to originate from the Mazateca Mountains in Oaxaca, Mexico—an area rich in biodiversity, limestone formations, and seasonal cloud forests.

Pinguicula sp. 'Mazatecas' is a rare and potentially undescribed species or locality form of Mexican butterwort, known for its neat, flat rosette of soft green to pink-tinged leaves. When grown under strong light, the foliage can take on subtle reddish hues. Like other Pinguicula, its sticky glandular leaves trap small flying insects, making it both functional and ornamental. Its exact classification is still under observation, but it is already appreciated by collectors for its charm, manageable size, and hardiness.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light to filtered sun. Does well under full-spectrum LED grow lights (5000–6500K).

Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

  • Succulent phase: Allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings.

Humidity: 60–85% recommended. Ensure gentle airflow to prevent mold and rot.

Temperature: Thrives in 16–25°C. Avoid exposure to cold drafts or frost.

Feeding: Feeds on small insects naturally. In low-insect environments, occasional feeding with crushed dried bloodworms or fish flakes (without additives) every few weeks is helpful.

Dormancy: No true dormancy. May produce slightly tighter or more succulent leaves in response to lower light or humidity.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With the right light and time, it will develop its full coloration. Mature size is typically 4–6 cm across.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to maintain humidity during transit. Top layer includes moss or sterile media for protection.

Medium: Carnivorous plant soil—low nutrient, moisture-retentive, and breathable.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid overhead watering—to preserve the sticky leaf surface.

  • Use only mineral-free water—tap water can damage roots and encourage salt buildup.

  • Maintain light airflow—important for preventing mold in humid setups.
