Scientific Name: Pinguicula 'Florian'

Also known as: Florian Butterwort

Origin: A cultivated hybrid of Mexican species, likely with Pinguicula moctezumae and/or Pinguicula giganteainfluence, developed for its vibrant foliage and manageable size.

Pinguicula 'Florian' is a compact and colourful butterwort hybrid that forms a tidy rosette of spoon-shaped leaves. Under strong light, the foliage ranges from pale green to deep pink, creating an eye-catching display even when not flowering. Each leaf is coated with glistening mucilage, designed to trap small insects like fungus gnats, making it both functional and ornamental. This variety is known for its uniform shape, fast growth, and brilliant coloration, making it a perfect choice for indoor setups or terrariums.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light or filtered sun. Thrives under artificial grow lights (5000–6500K).

Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep the soil consistently moist.

  • Succulent phase: Allow the top of the substrate to dry slightly between waterings.

Humidity: 60–85% is ideal. Light airflow helps prevent mold and promotes healthy growth.

Temperature: Best in 16–25°C. Protect from frost and extreme heat.

Feeding: Catches small insects naturally. Indoors, feed sparingly with crushed dried bloodworms or fish flakes once a month if no prey is available.

Dormancy: No true dormancy. Leaf shape may shift slightly in response to seasonal changes in light or temperature.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With proper light, it will develop its full pink blush. Mature rosettes reach approximately 5–7 cm across.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to retain humidity during transit. Includes a top layer of moss or sterile medium.

Medium: Low-nutrient carnivorous plant mix—moisture-retentive and breathable to promote healthy roots.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid wetting the leaves directly—it can reduce their ability to trap insects and may promote mold.

  • Use only mineral-free water—tap water can lead to salt buildup and damage roots.

  • Maintain airflow—especially important in humid environments to prevent fungal issues.
