Scientific Name: Pinguicula esseriana

Also known as: Esserian Butterwort, Miniature Rosette Butterwort

Origin: Endemic to Mexico, Pinguicula esseriana is found growing in rocky, limestone-rich habitats at higher elevations with seasonal rainfall.

Pinguicula esseriana is one of the smallest and most compact of the Mexican butterworts. It forms a tight, symmetrical rosette of tiny, spoon-shaped leaves that are soft green to pink under bright light. Each leaf is covered in sticky glands used to catch and digest tiny insects such as fungus gnats. This species is highly prized for its miniature size, tidy form, and suitability for small terrariums, grow cabinets, or decorative pots. Its petite appearance makes it a favourite among collectors of rare and space-efficient carnivorous plants.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light or filtered sun. Grows well under LED grow lights (5000–6500K).

Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep the substrate evenly moist.

  • Succulent phase: Allow the top of the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

Humidity: 60–85% is ideal. Provide gentle airflow to reduce mold and fungal risk.

Temperature: Thrives in 16–25°C. Protect from frost and extreme heat.

Feeding: Naturally catches tiny flying insects. Indoors, occasional feeding with crushed dried bloodworms or fish flakes is sufficient if no prey is present.

Dormancy: No true dormancy. Growth may slow slightly during cooler or drier seasons, with tighter leaf formation.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With time and proper lighting, it will develop its full colour and form. Mature rosettes are typically 2–4 cm in diameter—ideal for compact growing spaces.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to maintain humidity during shipping. Topped with sterile moss or medium for protection.

Medium: Special low-nutrient carnivorous plant mix—airy, moisture-retentive, and well-draining.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid overhead watering—to preserve the sticky traps and prevent mold.

  • Use only mineral-free water—tap water may cause salt buildup and root damage.

  • Provide good airflow—even in high humidity, airflow helps prevent fungal problems.
