Scientific Name: Pinguicula 'Emarginata x Hemiepiphytica'

Also known as: Emarginata-Hemiepiphytica Hybrid Butterwort

Origin: A cultivated hybrid between Pinguicula emarginata—a small, finely textured species—and Pinguicula hemiepiphytica, known for its adaptability and semi-epiphytic growth in Mexican cloud forests.

Pinguicula 'Emarginata x Hemiepiphytica' is an attractive and unique hybrid that produces a tidy, compact rosette of lightly scalloped leaves. The foliage may range from soft green to a blushing pink hue in bright conditions, and like all butterworts, the surface is covered in sticky glands that trap small insects such as fungus gnats and fruit flies. This hybrid combines the daintiness and fine form of emarginata with the adaptability and slightly larger size of hemiepiphytica, making it both charming and easy to grow.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light or filtered sun. Also thrives under full-spectrum LED grow lights (5000–6500K).

Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep the soil evenly moist.

  • Succulent phase: Allow the surface of the substrate to dry slightly before watering again.

Humidity: 60–85% ideal. Light airflow is recommended to prevent mold and maintain healthy leaves.

Temperature: Grows well in 16–25°C. Protect from cold temperatures and frost.

Feeding: Captures small insects naturally. Indoors, feed with crushed dried bloodworms or fish flakes once a month if no prey is available.

Dormancy: No true dormancy. Growth may slow and leaf shape may shift slightly in response to seasonal changes.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With time and light, it will develop more blush and colour. Mature rosettes typically reach 5–7 cm across.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to preserve humidity during shipping. Top layer includes protective moss or sterile medium.

Medium: Custom low-nutrient carnivorous plant mix—moisture-retentive, airy, and ideal for healthy root growth.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid wetting the leaves directly—this may reduce stickiness and encourage mold.

  • Use only mineral-free water—tap water can lead to salt accumulation and root issues.

  • Ensure gentle airflow—especially in humid environments, to reduce fungal problems and keep foliage healthy.
