Scientific Name: Pinguicula cyclosecta

Also known as: Cyclosecta Butterwort, Violet-Leaf Butterwort

Origin: Endemic to northeastern Mexico, particularly in limestone-rich mountainous areas with seasonal dry and wet periods.

Pinguicula cyclosecta is a stunning and compact Mexican butterwort, famous for its deep violet to bluish-purple foliage under bright light—a unique trait among Pinguicula species. The leaves form a small, tight rosette with a powdery matte texture and sticky glandular surface used to trap small flying insects. In lower light or during its succulent phase, the colour fades to soft green. This species is a favorite among collectors due to its striking colour, manageable size, and elegant shape.

Growing Requirements

Light: Bright indirect light or filtered sunlight. Strong LED grow lights (5000–6500K) help bring out its signature purple coloration.

Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.

Watering:

  • Carnivorous phase: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

  • Succulent phase (winter): Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings.

Humidity: 60–85% ideal. Provide gentle airflow to reduce the risk of mold or rot.

Temperature: Prefers 16–25°C. Not frost tolerant—keep above 10°C.

Feeding: Will trap and digest small insects on its own. Indoors, feed once a month with a tiny pinch of dried bloodworms or fish flakes if needed.

Dormancy: Experiences a winter succulent phase—leaves become shorter and fleshier, with reduced carnivory. Resume normal watering when new carnivorous leaves emerge in spring.

What’s Included

Plant: Small and sometimes green in colour at this stage. With time and bright light, it will develop its rich purple coloration. Mature size is typically 4–6 cm across.

Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to retain humidity during transit. Top layer includes protective moss or sterile medium.

Medium: Specialised carnivorous plant mix—low nutrient, moisture-retentive, and well-aerated.

Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.

Beginner Tips

  • Avoid watering the leaves directly—to preserve their sticky coating and prevent mold.

  • Only use mineral-free water—tap water can cause root damage and salt buildup.

  • Provide airflow—essential for preventing rot, especially during the succulent phase.
