Scientific Name: Drosera paradoxa
Also known as: Paradox Sundew
Origin: Native to northern Australia, particularly the Northern Territory and parts of Western Australia, where it grows in open, seasonally wet savannas and rocky outcrops.
Drosera paradoxa is a stunning tropical sundew species known for its tall, upright growth and long, narrow leaves that radiate from a central woody stem. The leaves are covered in sticky glandular hairs that trap and digest insects, making this species both striking and effective at natural pest control. Named “paradoxa” due to its unusual appearance among sundews, it continues to grow upwards and can form a trunk-like base over time. It’s a fast grower under warm, bright conditions and makes an excellent choice for experienced growers or anyone wanting an eye-catching specimen.
Light: Full sun to bright indirect light. Strong artificial lighting (5000–6500K) will support upright growth and red leaf coloration.
Water: Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.
Watering:
Active growth: Keep soil consistently moist. Ideal to sit in a tray of water.
Dry season adaptation (if mimicking native habitat): Reduce watering slightly while keeping humidity high.
Humidity: 60–90% preferred. Thrives in high-humidity setups with good airflow.
Temperature: Prefers warm tropical conditions—20–32°C ideal. Protect from cold below 15°C.
Feeding: Readily traps small flying insects. Indoors, feed monthly with dried bloodworms or fish flakes if no insects are available.
Dormancy: No true dormancy. May slow growth in lower light or cooler temperatures, but continues year-round in warm conditions.
Plant: Small and still developing height at this stage. With time and strong light, it will grow upright and develop its characteristic tall form. Mature plants can reach 15–40 cm tall depending on conditions.
Grow Cup: 5 cm clear plastic cup with ventilated lid to maintain humidity during transit. Top layer includes sterile moss or protective medium.
Medium: Low-nutrient, peat-based carnivorous plant mix—moisture-retentive and airy.
Instructions: Step-by-step planting and care guide included.
Keep warm and brightly lit—this is a tropical species that thrives in heat and sun.
Never let the soil dry out—standing water helps maintain needed moisture.
Use only mineral-free water—tap water can lead to root damage and leaf decline.
